This summer, I had the privilege of attending AIAS GRASSROOTS 2025, the organization’s annual leadership conference, held in Washington, D.C. The event brought together architecture students and volunteer leaders from across the country, creating a space where connection, community, and leadership took center stage.
The Power of Showing Up
One of the biggest takeaways for me was the importance of being present. Conferences like AIAS GRASSROOTS, NOMA National Conference, and AIA Annual Conference remind us that leadership isn’t built in isolation. It grows through shared experiences, collective energy, and the chance to learn from one another. Even in moments when I wasn’t in every session, just being surrounded by passionate peers and future leaders reinforced why these gatherings matter so much.
Keynote Inspiration
The keynote panel featuring Yu-Ngok Lo, Christina Hartsfield, Jaren Hill-Lockridge and Julian Owens left a lasting impression. These speakers, who are actively reshaping the built environment through advocacy and purpose-driven design, reminded us that architects are not just designers of buildings; we are shapers of futures. Their stories emphasized that equity, empathy, and advocacy must remain central to our profession.
I was also honored to speak on a panel titled “Lessons in Leadership, Identity, and Advocacy” through IAC. Sharing my story alongside Yu-Ngok Lo, Graciela Carrillo, and Saakshi Terway was both humbling and energizing. We reflected on how our backgrounds and values shape the way we lead, and how identity can strengthen - not limit - our ability to advocate for meaningful change. For me, the panel was a reminder that leadership starts with authenticity and grows stronger when voices are shared openly.
Another meaningful part of the weekend was representing the Immigrant Architects Coalition (IAC) at the EXPO. It gave us the opportunity to connect directly with students, introduce our mission, and share resources that support immigrant architects and allies navigating their careers in the U.S. We also highlighted our publications, which continue to serve as tools of guidance and inspiration for those pursuing architecture across borders. The booth became more than a display; it was a space for conversation, mentorship, and planting ideas for the next generation of leaders.
Why GRASSROOTS Matters
GRASSROOTS isn’t just about programming; it’s about perspective. It offers the opportunity to:
Build relationships that may last throughout your career.
Gain exposure to leaders and advocates who are shaping architecture today.
Be inspired by the collective spirit of students across the nation.
Recharge with purpose, returning to your chapter or community ready to lead.
Roll Call: My Favorite Moment
A true highlight was the Roll Call, a beloved AIAS tradition. Chapters introduce themselves with cheers, chants, skits, or songs, each bringing their own creativity and spirit. The room buzzed with energy as one by one, students proudly displayed their school spirit. It was more than fun; it was a celebration of identity, unity, and the power of belonging. I left that room feeling more connected than ever to a network where every voice, story, and background matters.
Reflections on Leadership
GRASSROOTS 2025 reminded me that leadership comes in many forms, whether through speaking on a panel, cheering during Roll Call, or simply showing up and being part of the conversation. I returned home energized and grateful for the AIAS community, and even more committed to finding ways to lead with purpose.
For any student, especially those navigating the profession as immigrants or underrepresented voices, I wholeheartedly recommend attending GRASSROOTS. It’s not just an event, it’s an experience that grounds you in community and prepares you to lead with authenticity.
